We want to position the Ocean Technology Campus as an international leading center for underwater technology and the sustainable use of the oceans.
Oceans cover the majority of our planet. They have a significant influence on shaping the climate, generate 80% of the world's oxygen, and provide habitat for countless species. But they also provide food, energy and a variety of raw materials that are essential for our modern society. Ecology and economy can only be reconciled through sustainable use, supported by the development of holistic maritime technologies – therefore, use and protection can and must work together. Key to such synergy is a comprehensive understanding of the ecosystem ocean, its influences and interdependencies.
Although the German marine technology possesses considerable technical know-how and extensive innovation potential, overall, so far it has only had a comparatively small share of the world market. The Ocean Technology Campus aims to strengthen the German marine technology by opening up important markets and providing an impetus for the sustainable use of the oceans worldwide – at one of Germany's most traditional maritime locations, in Rostock. A large number of maritime research institutions and companies have already come together under the umbrella of the Ocean Technology Campus.
