What tasks do you work on?

We develop modularly assembled underwater systems. Our goal is to make the demanding work with diving robots simple and efficient with our modular system. Our containers are designed in such a way that they can therefore be assembled individually and different sensors, motors or so-called manipulators, i.e. robot arms, can be used, depending on what our customers need. For example, we developed a camera system for the OTC-smartFishing cluster project. Our container forms the basic structure in which the cameras are located. In the OTC-BASE project, we are developing an underwater platform for docking various modules. Here our containers form the hardware in which various control and power elements are installed.

As a management assistant, I am responsible for internal organization, corporate development and human resources management. Our marketing, social media presence and networking also fall into my area.

Since September 2022, I have been a member of the steering committee of the Future Cluster. There I am responsible for communication and equal opportunities and participate in strategic decisions.

What does your working day look like?

The nice thing about my job is that there is no fixed workday. As a start-up, we are still in the discovery phase. So I can do a lot very freely and help shape the company conceptually and culturally. I work a lot on defining our goals and our vision. In the area of human resources, I take care of tenders and recruiting. And as a kind of feel-good manager, I have a lot of conversations with our employees about how we can shape working conditions so that it's a good fit for everyone. I also plan and organize our appointments and trade fair appearances.

What do you enjoy most about your work?

There are many things that I really enjoy. Here I can combine my passion for the oceans with building something and contributing to marine conservation. I'm burning to contribute to the success of our company with my technical background. It's great to be able to work so freely and shape my position as I see fit. This is possible because we communicate with each other at eye level. I'm also very happy that I have the chance to contribute my knowledge and experience to the steering committee of the Future Cluster in a field as promising as marine technology.

How does your work contribute to sustainability?

Our incentive is to bring people closer to the oceans so that they not only use them, but are also prepared to protect them. To do that, technology is key. We ask ourselves how we can optimize existing ocean technology and thus make it more sustainable. We succeed in this with our modules, which can be flexibly adapted and reused for a wide variety of needs and purposes. This means that our customers only receive the components they really need, e.g. for seabed exploration, subsoil investigations, monitoring and maintenance work on underwater structures and ships, or even for munitions clearance. In many areas, ROVs and underwater robots are only needed temporarily. We are therefore working on offering rental models in the future. This is efficient and more sustainable.

What advice would you give to others interested in ocean technology?

Even though I went to sea with the Navy and am passionate about kiteboarding, I am a career changer in the field of ocean technology as a social educator. That's how I know: It's never too late to make a new decision. If you are on fire for something, no matter how unusual or unconventional it may be, pursue your goals and don't let them get you down. There is always a door open somewhere.
